Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues
Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues is
the only national organization whose mission is to advocate for increased
support of LGBT issues within organized philanthropy. The organization
also serves to educate individuals and organizations about philanthropy
and how to access philanthropic resources specific to LGBT communities. To
this end, FLGI produces publications, a newsletter and conducts research,
all of which is downloadable through their website and offered free of
charge.
What may be of particular interest to LGBT community centers across
the country is FLGI’s national directory of funders who
support LGBT programs, by state as well as nationally. Funders
of LGBT Programs: A Directory for Grantseekers, lists 300 foundations
and corporate giving programs. The Directory can be accessed online
through their website or paper copies can be purchased through FLGI. In
addition, all LGBT community centers should add their organization’s
information to FLGI’s database of LGBT organizations, because funders do refer to this database when considering grantmaking.
For more information about Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues, go to www.lgbtfunders.org or
call 212-475-2930.

Need help?
If you have never applied for a federal grant, it may be a good idea to partner with an organization experienced in the process, such as a local university or health center/hospital/clinic. You can also contact the district offices/grants contacts of your congressional representatives for assistance. Please call Becky Levin, Senior Government Affairs Strategist at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), at 202-639-6326 if you have any other questions. Or, if you'd like to directly receive the listings of federal funding opportunities, e-mail Becky Levin at blevin@thetaskforce.org
Verizon Foundation Technology Training Grants

Nonprofit organizations can receive training grants for NPower classes, thanks to a renewed partnership with the Verizon Foundation. The training grants are offered through the Verizon Foundation Resource Center, a suite of free, web-based professional development courses and resources that help nonprofits better manage their charitable business.
The program, first launched a year ago, has been extended through May 2007 at nine NPower affiliate locations: Atlanta, Denver, Detroit, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland (OR) and Seattle. Through the Verizon Foundation Resource Center in 2005, these affiliates provided nearly 500 training grants to more than 250 unique nonprofit organizations across the country. Other partners of the Resource Center include ePhilanthropy, CompuMentor/TechSoup.org, Volunteer Consultant Group, Society for Nonprofit Organizations, and the Foundation Center. Each partner contributes content and classes to the Resource Center web site.
To learn more about how to apply for a training grant for both on-line or "on-land" training opportunities, visit the Verizon Foundation Resource Center.
