Information Technology - Tips
Technology Planning If you have applied or plan to apply for any technology funding you have or will be asked to provide a technology plan. What is a technology plan? A technology plan is the single most important ingredient to an effective use of technology in your organization. The technology planning process will help you minimize technology-related crises, use staff time efficiently, and avoid wasting money on equipment that makes your life miserable. It will help you think through your priorities in order to use technology in a way that directly furthers your mission. It will help you budget for technology and make cost-effective purchases. Even more spectacularly, you can use a technology plan as a key tool to advocate for technology funding. Circuit Riders Do you need help with your organizations technology? Maybe you should consider hiring a Circuit Rider. Circuit riders, named for the clerics who traveled from church to church in the American frontier, are technology consultants who work with a community of nonprofits. A circuit rider is a computer expert, trainer, management consultant, and communications strategist all rolled into one. Grow your email list! Now that you have the idea of starting an e-newsletter or maybe your organization already has one. Are you reaching all of your community? Make sure that your web address is on everything that you publish with a sign up form on your website and that all donation cards and reply cards have places for email addresses. Do you have booths at pride festivals or other community events? Offer a sign up list anywhere and everywhere you can. Another way to grow your list is to have a drawing for a prize and each email address is an entry. Prizes can range from a t-shirt to airline tickets. Keep the time ranges short between drawings so that there is some urgency to sign up for the list.

Virus Attack! Are you Protected? With the release of yet another worm virus, it is time to check our virus protection. Is your organization protected? As a non-profit organization your technology budget may not have afforded room for virus protection in the past. With the new fiscal year upon us, it may be time to rethink your planning for virus protection. There are many free options for virus removal and protection. For more info on free resources click here. Although free always sounds great for a non-profit at first, you may wish to compare the benefits of a free resource as opposed to a low cost solution. Some of these benefits are listed here. One of the biggest names in the anti-virus game is Symantec Norton Anti-Virus. Normally protection of this kind could very well be out of the reach of a non-profit budget, but Symantec has generous product donation pograms that are facilitated by Gifts In Kind International and Techsoup.org No matter what method your organization chooses for anti-virus protection, make sure that you continue to practice safe computing!
